Mechanics are the abilities found on Magic the Gathering cards. Understanding these concepts is key to being an expert magic player and deck builder.
This is a continuation of Magic the Gathering Card Mechanics. Below are the abilities F through K, starting with Fear and ending with Kicker.
Fear Fear is an evasion ability that has always been in Magic sets but was not added as a keyword until the 8th Edition Core Set. Creatures with fear can only be blocked by black creatures or artifact creatures. This mechanic is most commonly found on black creatures, but there are a few creatures of other colors. These creatures normally require black mana in some way to keep the creature in play or to use the fear ability. An example of a black creature with fear is Undercity Shade, and a red creature with fear is Squealing Devil.
Flanking Flanking is a triggered ability. Any non-flanking creature that blocks a creature with Flanking gets –1/-1 until the end of turn. An example of a card with Flanking is Benalish Cavalry from Time Spiral.
Flying Flying is a static ability which first appeared in the Alpha set. This ability makes it to where a creature with Flying cannot be blocked only by other creatures with Flying or creatures with Reach. An example of a creature with Flying is Skeletal Vampire from Guildpact.
Fortify As of yet, only one card had been released with the Fortify ability: Darksteel Garrison. What Fortify accomplishes is similar to artifact equipment. Fortify allows an artifact to be attached to a land card. Like artifact equipment, the card with Fortify stays in play even if the land it is attached to is removed from play.
Frenzy Frenzy is a triggered ability that has only been released on one card at this point, Frenzy Sliver from Future Sight. This ability allows for a creature that goes unblocked during its attack phase to get +x/+0 until the end of turn. According to official Magic rule book, if a creature has multiple Frenzy abilities, they will trigger separately. At this time, there is no card with multiple Frenzy abilities, but it has been stated for the purpose of future cards with this ability.
Graft As of yet, Graft is an ability that is only found in the set of Ravnica. Cards with the Graft mechanic start as 0/0 when played; they come into play with x +1/+1 counters. When you play another creature after playing a creature with Graft, you may move a +1/+1 counter onto that creature. An example of a card with Graft is Cytoplast Manipulator.
Haunt Haunt is a triggered ability that made its appearance in Guildpact. First, a card with Haunt is played as normal. When that card goes to the graveyard or in the case of an instant/sorcery it resolves, the card "haunts" another creature. The Haunt effect triggers when that creatures hits the graveyard. A player is allowed to Haunt his or her own creatures in addition to being able to Haunt an opponent’s creatures. An example of a creature with Haunt is Blind Hunter.
Hellbent Hellbent first makes its appearance in the Ravnica block. This ability grants an ability or bonus for the player not having any cards in his or her hand. Anthem of Rakdos from Ravnica is an example of a card with Hellbent.
Imprint Imprint is an ability that is triggered when a card is played. When an artifact with Imprint is played, the player chooses an effect to imprint upon the artifact. The type of effect or card types will be listed on the individual card. For example, Mirror Golem from Mirrodin allows the player to exile a target card from a graveyard. Mirror Golem then has protection from the exiled card’s type(s).
Indestructible Indestructible is static ability that adds a new element to the game. Any permanent with the Indestructible mechanic cannot be destroyed or killed with lethal damage. Cards with this ability are only vulnerable to remove from the game effects or causing the player to have to sacrifice the permanent with Indestructible. An example of a permanent with Indestructible is Darksteel Colossus, which was original released in Darksteel, but has since been released as a mythic rare in Magic 2010.
Kicker Kicker is a static ability that was most popular is the Invasion block, which includes the Invasion set, the Apocalypse set and the Planeshift set. The player may pay an additional cost when playing a spell to activate a special ability or bonus for that card. An example of a card with Kicker is Ana Battlemage from Planar Chaos.
